first get rid of the last set of () by doing distributive property with the - sign
x^2 + 2x -1 - x^2 + 2x -1
=4x - 2

(x² + 2x - 1) - (x² - 2x + 1)
Add like terms.
(x² - x²) + (2x + 2x) + (-1 - 1)
Simplify.
4x - 2
