Brown vs Board reverses the 1896 Plessy vs Ferguson decision, which up until 1954 made “separate but equal” a lawful doctrine. The court decided that separate was not equal and it violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Public schools could no longer segregate based on race, and so began the modern-day civil rights movement calling for equality throughout the country.
